The Moss

The Moss is the outcome of a five-day dance residency led by Minako Seki. The residency set out to explore the principles of the Seki Method and to develop a collective, site-specific performance centered on KE-HEI, a Japanese expression meaning “what is behind us.” The concept denotes a reverence for one’s origins and ancestry, an acknowledgment of the past that carries a certain mystery and the atmosphere of a concealed, intimate history. Taking moss as its guiding metaphor, the ensemble of residents embodied the plant’s quiet and largely unnoticed mode of existence. Moss grows slowly, in the margins and the shade, yet it sustains a complex and resilient life. In this way, the performance proposed a parallel between the plant’s hidden vitality and the buried that persist beneath the surface of the present.
