Lethargy
Lethargy is an interdisciplinary work that interweaves movement, sound, and video. Choreographed in response to the earthquake that struck Kermanshah, in western Iran, the piece engages with the aftermath of collective loss. The disaster claimed the lives of many residents and destroyed homes, communities, and the material foundations of local identity, leaving survivors to endure prolonged precarity and displacement.
Through the interplay of the body, sound, and moving image, Lethargy explores how trauma and institutional neglect settle into a place and its people, and how the slowness of recovery may be experienced physically as heaviness, stasis, and depletion.
The choreographer reflects on this title and its context:
“This choreographic piece is called Lethargy because I perceive an atmosphere of enervation in this city. In the absence of adequate financial and psychological support from the state, its inhabitants lack the energy to move forward and to improve their circumstances.” (Choreographer)
