The Doubt

تمام روز نگاه من به چشمهای زندگیم خیره گشته بود به آن دو چشم مضطرب ترسان که از نگاه ثابت من می‌گریختند و چون دروغگویان به انزوای بی‌خطر پناه میآورند (فروغ فرخزاد) All day long I was staring at my life’s eyes Those sacred eyes, that were escaping from my constant gaze And like the liars harbor to the secure loneliness (Forough Farrokhzad) This work originates in the choreographer’s personal experience of living in a religiously shaped society, where a sense of doubt first took hold. She witnessed a contradiction between her own ambitions and preferences and the prevailing socio-cultural norms. This tension produces a doubled identity, in which one is compelled to conceal one side of the self depending on the situation. The choreography seeks to embody this inner contradiction as experienced by women, capturing the struggle between personal desire and social expectation. It asks: “To what extent are our decisions and behaviour bound to social constructions? Are we lying to ourselves or to others? Do we have the power to stand against these constraints?” Three performers were accompanied by a Daf player (Iranian frame drum). The musician, Saber Jafari, also sings during the performance. His rare ability to combine instrument and voice creates an epic atmosphere that strengthens the choreographic idea. The piece drew the attention of the jury. The choreographer received juries appreciated award, and the performer received the Best Supporting Performer award.
