تا زمانی که رسیدن به تو امکان دارد
زندگی درد قشنگیست که جریان دارد (علی صفری)
As long as it's possible to reach,
life is a persistent beautiful pain (Ali Safari)
Imkaan is an Indo-Iranian collaborative project that integrates the performing and visual arts, specifically dance and photography. Its central idea engages the concept of liminality as theorised by the cultural anthropologist Victor Turner.
Liminality refers to in-betweenness: moments in and out of time, states of transition. It is a phenomenon witnessed worldwide, as individuals and societies alike are continually shaped by socio-political and cultural change, and transition is inevitable. A similar narrative has unfolded in Iran over the past four decades, where dance is restricted for women. Unlike men, women are not permitted to perform in public.
Imkaan, which means “possibility” in Persian, tells the story of an Iranian dancer who travels abroad and of the transitional phase her BODY undergoes: a state in which it feels detached from the limits it faced in her home context, neither here nor there, and in which it finally learns to desire and believe in a mental image of “freedom.” The project originated in the search for invisible possibility within seemingly impossible situations.
